【Get to know Taiwan】Father’s Day

Technically everyone shall have birth father but not everyone knows their birth father. Some people have different fathers, such as stepfather, adoptive father, foster father and so on. But how did the idea of “Father’s Day” get started?

In 1909, John B. Dobb wanted to express her wish to delicate a day who memorize her father, William Jackson Smart, who raised his six children after his wife died. Then she proposed to her pastor that fathers should have similar holiday honoring them. After some work, finally the 1st Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910 in USA.

Lots of countries then followed to designate a date for Father’s Day celebration. In Taiwan, the Father’s Day Celebration is held on August 8 of every year. This day was actually suggested by some people in Shanghai to express their gratitude to the families which lost fathers during War of Resistance Against Japan (1937-1945). In Mandarin, the pronunciation of number 8 “ba” is very similar to the pronunciation of father “ba”. As a result, Taiwan Government after the war designated August 8 as “Father’s Day”.

“Father’s Day” gives children an opportunity to express their appreciation, including birth fathers. However, for some people who do not have birth father in their lives due to numerous reasons, it may be difficult to thank birth fathers. However, in order to reach wholeness of self, it is encouraged to appreciate this “birth father” for giving a life at the level of personhood rather than only in their roles. We cannot change the fact that the role of father is missing but we can change its impact on us.
